Don't underestimate the convenience of having all the RPMs there. Being
able to punch in, say, "up2date gcc" on a 7.x machine where you forgot
to install the development stuff initially, is really quite neat. (I
suppose this is less of an issue on 8.0/9 where you have
redhat-config-packages, but up2date is still a quicker way of snarfing
a single package like, say, ncftp.)

If I remember correctly, it has actually happened in the past. I don't
recall a specific example right now, so I might not be remembering
correctly, however.

Yes, it works going back to 6.2 (I have a 6.2 repository still, with a
client machine still on it). 6.0/6.1 can be made to work if one or two
problematic RPMs are left out (I'll find the details later if you wish).
All of my attempts to make up2date run on 5.x have failed (segfaults),
which isn't too surprising considering that up2date was introduced with
6.0.

BTW, I had a 7.1-on-Alpha client working on it too (right now that
client is waiting to be reinstalled for reasons that are not relevant to
this thread).
